Josef and Hannah will see their first American baseball game Saturday at Yankee Stadium, but they will be unlike any of the other children attending the Bombers’ crucial showdown with the Boston Red Sox.

They are only weeks removed from the harsh reality of life in a Polish Displaced Persons camp. Orphaned by the war, they have come to America for a new life, where they have found a welcome refuge with the United Service for New Americans in the Hotel Marseilles, the gathering spot for recently arrived DPs.

“When they first arrived, Hannah would not speak,” Karina Lazda, a United Service worker explains. “Not a word. Now she will say a few words in Polish to us. And she is smiling. That is a milestone for her, and it makes all of us so happy.”

Josef, twelve years old, has learned some English—nearly all of it connected to his new favorite pastime, watching the New York Yankees and his hero, Joe DiMaggio, on television.

Saturday he may see the Yankee Clipper in person.
